The Northeast Colorado Regional EMS/Trauma Advisory Council is a consortium of 9 counties EMS and Trauma services in Northeast Colorado. Jackson, Larimer, Weld, Morgan, Logan, Washington, Phillips, Sedgwick and Yuma Counties. The region is just over 17,000 square miles of territory. 5,000 square miles larger than Maryland and 7,000 square miles smaller than Virginia. Geographic as well as demographic diversity both challenge and strengthen the region. From counties that have less that one person per square mile to counties that have endured double digit growth in between censuses. There are also counties that have had to deal with loss of population along with an increased age of patients. The region has one National Park, numerous state parks, two interstate highway's and borders on 3 different states. The Northeast Colorado RETAC borders encompass 16 EMS transport services. Calls for service range from around 50 per year for the smaller services to well over 20,000 per year for the larger services. Of the 12 designated trauma centers 2 are designated at a Level II, 3 are designated at Level III, and 7 are designated at The NCRETAC board of directors as directed by statute and as identified through the bylaws are appointed by the Board of County Commissioners in each county. Representation of two people where possible are balanced between pre-hospital and facilities and equal representation per county. The NCRETAC has 18 representatives from the 9 counties that serve on the board.
Patient care remains first and foremost in the goals. To make this happen it is important to find mechanisms where Emergency Medical and Trauma Systems providers to work together to meet changes with an organized approach. Each RETAC in the state of Colorado is a liaison between the providers of care and the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment. Challenges abound with the services in the NCRETAC. Changing rules, statutes, reimbursement changes by Medicare, all hazards planning, HIPPA, reimbursement changes with auto insurance and more all provide for new challenges at the provider level and it is the goal of the NCRETAC to assist agencies cope with the changes and assist agencies in the direction of improved patient care.
